Benji by Sun Kil Moon free essay sample
Simplistic but melodic. Tragic but warm. Small-scale stories, grand-scale meta-narratives. These descriptions come to mind when listening to Mark Kozeleks sixth studio LP with Sun Kil Moon, ââ¬Å"Benji.â⬠Folk-rooted, acoustic-driven, and showcasing Kozeleks usual free-styling vocals that give you the impression hes spouting them spontaneously, ââ¬Å"Benjiâ⬠dares to tackle some of lifes toughest topics, all through the intimate voice that has become Kozeleks niche. To call him a songwriter is an injustice. He is a storyteller. The album has 11 tracks. Each features a tragedy, whether a death in the family, a community-based horror, or a failed relationship. Each song is based on a true story, and is told from Kozeleks perspective. Its as if he is taking a tour of his past, and the people and events that shaped it, and inviting us to join him. In the opening ballad, ââ¬Å"Carissa,â⬠Kozelek relates his struggles to ââ¬Å"find some meaningâ⬠in the abrupt and seemingly senseless death of a second cousin he barely knew. In ââ¬Å"Dogs,â⬠he bemoans the predictable and unavoidable demise of an exclusively physical relationship, using examples from his past. ââ¬Å"Pray for Newtown,â⬠a tribute to the victims and families affected by the 2012 Connecticut shooting, describes how we are all greatly impacted by à catastrophes, though strangely go on living as though nothing happened. How much you enjoy ââ¬Å"Benjiâ⬠ultimately comes down to how much you appreciate Kozeleks style and understand where hes coming from. This is not an album meant to stimulate in short bursts ââ¬â most of the tracks are long and feature similar minimal melodies. The saxophones come out in the closer, ââ¬Å"Bens My Friend,â⬠the albums most upbeat and unpredictable track, but for the most part, ââ¬Å"Benjiâ⬠has the feel of an album more concerned with its content than with its immediate à surroundings. Arguably Sun Kil Moons most intriguing and thought-provoking work to date, ââ¬Å"Benjiâ⬠s simplistic aesthetic approach and gritty subject matter make for one of the most complete albums this year. F

Yousif Saleh Essays (855 words) - Education, Educational Psychology
Yousif Saleh Philyaw AP Lang 3/13/16 Synthesis Essay: Technology Throughout the years of education, Technology has become integrated into the scholastic system. Technology has become a widespread method of schooling as it proves to be beneficial for the advancement of the students' performance. Although technology allows teaching to become more fluid, it can hinder the performance of students. National test scores are declining ever since technology became a daily part of people's boring lives. There are speculations to why students are obtaining drastically inferior results; however, the most obvious reason to this phenomenon is the implementation of technology in society and especially in schools. A school should consider the effects of technology on students' cognitive ability and the probability for students to commit to off-task activities. Students tend to deliberate less with the wide usage of technology. They place an extreme amount of trust on the internet and rarely rely on their own cognitive prowess. This reliance on technology causes students to feel at ease since no actual thinking is involved and the solutions are all located with a click of a button. Without the ability to properly analyze and brainstorm, students will be hopeless when technology is stripped from them. During a timed essay prompt, technology will not be there to aid the students through the assignment. Essays require highly advanced analysis and creatively skills since the student must take position regarding the prompt. To develop an argument, one must completely have faith in themselves and determine faults in both their own argument and the opposing argument. Technology does nothing but diminishes their capabilities to do so. Dyson asserts that technology "stifles a child's imagination rather than stimulate it." (Source C). Inste ad of technology improving the extent of a child's imagination it ruins and encloses it. This must be recognized by schools because if technology is not used wisely, it can seriously affect students' academic betterment. It is almost as if technology locks people up in a virtual prison. Angel Boligan draws a fascinating cartoon of a child imprisoned in a dark and gloomy room (Source F). The child is experiencing the outside world through a television screen, and this is a perfect example of the entanglement that technology oppresses on students. As the student watches only the television, he completely depends on the TV for information. In a sense, nature represents the blossoms of creativity and technology holds students back from true enlightenment. Although I made it seem like technology is a horrible device to use for education it has some benefits. It allows academics to become more convenient and accessible for both students and teachers. The internet provides students with a wealth of information that could assist students when and if they are perplexed about a certain topic. With a click of a button, students are able to find explanations and solutions to problems they couldn't probe through. I learn efficiently through everyday technology. Delaney affirms that technology "allows educators to interact with students, parents and each other in ways they never have before." (Source B). Innovation generated a large community of educator with a goal of providing knowledge to their fellow students. Students can access all sorts of information to their benefit. Gelernter quotes from President Clinton that technology "could make it possible for every child to reach every book ever written." (Source E). With every book ever written, students can become literary geniuses, but they choose not to. Rotstein argues that "electronic materials will get students more engaged in learning." (Source A). However, I ultimately deviate from his point of view because technology will only lead students to conform to non-scholastic online activities. None of the sources address this issue as a problem to the school system but I dispute that it is most important. If students don't stay on the course given materials, then they won't learn anything at all. There are an abundance of information on the internet, consisting of beneficial and useless information. Since the internet is such a broad medium it is easy for students to drive off-task. The internet mostly consists of garbage that can only restrict the human mind. Gelernter offers another point of view claiming that the internet "is

Gender idendity
Gender idendity Tran Nguyen ESSAY 1ENG111/ENF3 (027N) GENDER IDENTITYAdmit it or not, surely there would be a time you walk on the street or into a convenient store then see a gal or guy but still wonder if they are really are. For example, last week, when I was on my way to class, I was, by chance, seeing a guy with a very long hair covering half of his face, who at first I thought he was a girl until he greeted his buddy with a fist bump. We might naturally think that guys mostly stick with games or gangs, and girls with hair and clothes, but life isn't that simple.Nowadays, we can easily see a girl who is gathering with a bunch of boys and playing soccer; or a guy who is chatting with his best friends about how long he has been growing his pony tail.We somehow might find this kind of weird, but I personally think that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this. There is one thing that we should get clear: sex is not gender. As Judith Lorber claimed in "Night to His Day" 1, "Individuals are born s exed, but not gendered, and they have to be masculine or feminine" (57). Many of us might misunderstand what the real meaning of sex and gender. While sex refers to biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women, gender refers to socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women (WHO) 2. Kid these days cannot really choose their own favorite toys as their parents will pay all cost to prevent their sons from intruding "pink zone" and facing being judged by society (Guys And Dolls No More? - Elizabeth Sweet) 3. Nowadays, there are...

The Typical Diet of a Polar Bear
The Typical Diet of a Polar Bear Polar bears are often common in the mainstream media and get a lot of attention due to their threatened populations. In addition to questions about their habitat, you may wonder what they eat? Polar bears are one of the largest bear species (many sources say they are the largest). They can grow anywhere from 8 feet to 11 feet in height and about 8 feet in length. Polar bears weigh about 500 to 1,700 pounds, and they live the cold Arctic- in parts of Alaska, Canada, Denmark/Greenland, Norway, and Russia. They are largeà marine mammalsà with a varied appetite. Dietà The preferred prey for polar bears are seals- the species they prey upon most often are ringed seals and bearded seals, two species that are members of the group of seals known as ice seals. They are known as ice seals because they need ice for giving birth, nursing, resting, and finding prey. Ringed seals are one of the most common seal species in the Arctic. They are a small seal that grows to about 5 feet in length and about 150 pounds in weight. They live on top of, and underneath the ice, and use claws on their front flippers to dig breathing holes in the ice. A polar bear will patiently wait for the seal to surface to breathe or climb onto the ice, and then it will swat it with its claws or pounce on it. The polar bear feeds primarily on the seals skin and blubber, leaving the meat and carcass for scavengers. According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, a polar bear may kill a ringed seal every two to six days. Bearded seals are larger, and grow from 7 feet to 8 feet in length. They weigh 575 to 800 pounds. Polar bears are their main predator. Unlike the more open breathing holes of ringed seals, the breathing holes of bearded seals are capped with ice, which may make them less easy to detect. If their preferred prey isnt available, polar bears will feed on walruses, whale carcasses, or even garbage if they live near humans. Polar bears have a strong sense of smell, which comes in handy for finding prey, even from long distances- and even in cold weather. Predators Do polar bears have predators? Polar bear predators include killer whales (orcas), possibly sharksà and humans. Polar bear cubs may be killed by smaller animals, such as wolves, and other polar bears. Privacy is not the most important right Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Privacy is not the most important right - Essay Example There was very limited control in the society. However, modern institutions have developed controls that have raised very various privacy concerns. Privacy has become a matter of concern to many thinkers, law makers, human rights activists and other essential policy makers. Despite the significance of the right to privacy and the existing laws supporting it, government agencies, security departments and legislative authorities across the globe have engaged in laws and acts that violate the right to privacy as a basic principle that define human dignity. The guiding principle for security agencies in Britain is that security interests and ensuring stable human security is supersedes the basic right to privacy. The United Kingdom has overemphasized the protection of human security at the expense of the constitutional right to privacy. The installation of public surveillance cameras in major cities and towns in Britain is an example of a major violation of the fundamental right to privacy in the country. As a matter of fact, every individual has something to hide from the public, a fact that may be infringed by the installation of surveillance cameras. It is a universally acknowledged that people should not be allowed to hide under the guise of the right privacy to commit crimes and cause harm to law abiding members of the society. Proponents of this point of view hold that privacy is not one of the most fundamental human rights. Most scholars will concur with my position that, privacy defines comprehensively the right to be left alone and refrain from sharing an individualââ¬â¢s private information with other people. Some of the common issues that are catered for by privacy rights include: individual truths, private matters and issues, individual information as well as ones secrecy. The right to privacy is commonly popular and profound to free people. It offers a significant amount of

Art History 306 Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Art History 306 - Dissertation Example The proximity and accessibility of the artists to each otherââ¬â¢s lives and work sprouted an art ââ¬Å"sceneâ⬠with ââ¬Å"constant face to face encountersâ⬠¦constant feedback, mutual awarenessâ⬠(Sandler, 1978, pg. 30) and frequent socializing in ââ¬Å"semi-public and public meeting placesâ⬠. (Sandler, 1978, p. 29) The ambience was electric, for it ââ¬Å"generated social and intellectual exchangesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"and it was natural for vanguard artists in every field to gravitate to the world of the New York schoolâ⬠(Sandler, 1978, p.22). This solidarity was reinforced by a post war sentiment of alienation which could best be summarized as ââ¬Å"you had a feeling â⬠¦ of you and your friends against everyone on the outside.â⬠(Sandler, 1978, p. 29) Disillusioned further by the political climate and pseudo culture of Middle America, the vanguard artists turned to their art for ââ¬Å"self-discovery, freedom of belief and action, and autonomous, honest creation.â⬠(Sandler, 1978, p.21) The canvas became an ââ¬Å"arena in which to actâ⬠(Rosenberg, 1959) and gestural painting was adopted by such influential figures as de Kooning and Hofmann. Art produced during this time was coined Abstract Expressionism (Rosenberg, 1959).
